Endodontics is the medical science within dentistry that deals with the internal tissues of the tooth and related diseases and treatments.
The dental pulp contained within the tooth is a highly specialized tissue consisting of arteries, veins, nerve endings and connective cells.
Several pathological situations can intervene to disrupt pulpal health, the most frequent of which is dental caries, which is the progressive decalcification and destruction of the hard tissues of the tooth due to the action of bacterial plaque microorganisms.
If timely action is not taken, the cavity produced by caries reaches a degree of extension and depth that allows bacteria to reach the dental pulp, leading to irreversible transformations to it due to infection.
When this stage is reached, the conservative treatment that allows the tooth to be maintained while avoiding extraction is endodontic therapy, also called root canal treatment or devitalization.
The result is that the tooth will no longer be an infectious reservoir, and after proper reconstruction, the tooth can continue to perform the same functions as an intact tooth.
On the other hand, it is called endodontic reprocessing, the treatment that becomes necessary when it is necessary to repeat the root canal cleaning and disinfection procedure previously carried out by other practitioners due to a failure in therapy, often due to errors in execution, anatomical complexity, and objective difficulties.
The main causes leading to intervention with endodontic treatment are due to:
- Prosthetic-parodontal motivations.
- Tooth crown fractures with dental pulp exposure
- Repeated interventions over time that cause irreversible inflammation of the pulp leading to loss of vitality of the tooth
- Severe or mild but repeated dental trauma over time.

Many people think that “devitalization” is synonymous with “losing” a tooth, but this is not the case at all. Root canal therapy is done precisely to try to save your tooth and keep it inside your mouth as much as possible.
This is why it is called “conservative”: because it goes to eliminate all the bacteria that have damaged your tooth’s pulpal tissue, without the need to remove it.
